Puss in Boots – Movie Review and Synopsis

This week we are reviewing : Puss in Boots! Puss in Boots Puss in boots is actually a spin off from the hugely popular Shrek series by Dreamworks. Antonio Banderas comes back in this movie as the cute yet suave Puss in Boots. Joining him as Kitty Softpaws is Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty. Other stars in this movie include Billy Bob Thornton as Jack (of Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack came down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after) Trailer of Puss in Boots

Short Synopsis - For those in a rush

Antonio Banderas puts up an amazing performance as Puss in Boots once again. Being sworn brothers with Humpty Dumpty, he was betrayed by him and outlawed. He teams up with Humpty Dumpty years later to find the legendary magic bean to get the golden egg laying goose high up in the sky.

Detailed Synopsis - With all the spoilers and everything

As with Zorro, Antonio Banderas, I mean Puss in Boots rides off as a wanderer into the sunset and in the next scene enters the pub as shown in the trailer. There, he found the legend of the magic beans that leads up to the castle in the sky where the golden eggs are.

Jack and Jill (the mean looking version) meanwhile checks into town with their magic beans. Puss in Boots sneaks into their room in the hope of stealing the magic beans. But Kitty Softpaws (played by Salma Hayek) also enters and goes for the same item.

Jack and Jill spots them and Kitty Softpaws escapes first leaving Puss in Boots to fend for himself. After a short struggle he too escapes and he gave pursuit of Kitty Softpaws. She leads him into a cat's lair and they started fighting , dancing style! A sign displayed "Dance Fight, Tuesday Night" when Puss thought he was going to fight Kitty. Soon after all the dance scenes, they went into a real fight and Kitty led Puss to meet Humpty Dumpty.

Humpty (brain) then made the proposal for Puss to join them to get the magic beans from Jack(brawn) and Jill(nifty pickpocket). He strongly disagreed and he left. The next scene shows the famous portion of the trailer where Puss goes after a ray of light shone by Kitty. He then shares with her why he did not want to cooperate with Humpty.

Years ago, Humpty and Puss were both in the same Orphanage looked after by their 'mother'. They looked after each other and enjoyed each other's company. One day, Humpty and Puss sworn to become brothers and Humpty shares with Puss the secret of the magic beans. From then on, they hijacked all sorts of beans like jelly beans, green, red beans and so on. However, after failing for some time, the idea faded into oblivion.

The next scene showed how Puss in Boots saved someone and became a hero. On the other hand, Humpty continued with crimes and landed himself in jail. One day, Humpty stole a great deal of treasure and roped Puss into it. The guards saw that Puss was in cahoots with Humpty and gave chase to the both of them. At the bridge, Humpty was caught but Puss jumped off the bridge and became an outlaw thereafter.

Kitty then continued to persuade Puss and he eventually agreed to join the both of them. The next scene shows them hiding in the mountains as they lie in wait for Jack and Jill to pass by in their carriage. They hopped onto the carriage and looked for the magic beans without alerting Jack and Jill. However, they accidentally woke one of the pigs in the carriage and Jack and Jill were alerted. After some struggle, Puss and Kitty managed to escape jumping unto the carriage that Humpty rode parallel to Jack and Jill's. However, Jack and Jill continued to gave chase and forced them to ride off a cliff. The good thing was Humpty had converted the carriage into a flying machine and they escaped from the clutches of Jack and Jill.

They soon found the location whereby they had to plant the magic beans. The beans of course sprouted into a giant stalk and brought them all the way up into the clouds. There, they found the giant castle. They entered and navigated pass some giant furnitures and entered into an enchanted forest. They then had a close encounter with the mother goose. Before long, they saw a pile of golden eggs and the baby goose that laid the eggs. Without further hesitation, they took the baby goose (that laid golden eggs) and left.

TWIST/SPOILER ALERT! Humpty double crossed Puss and went back to their childhood town and started to gain popularity by giving golden eggs to everyone. Puss on the other hand was apprehended by the guards and realised that even Kitty had betrayed him. Humpty then told Puss how he worked together with Jack and Jill as well as Kitty to get back at him and land him back in jail.

As Puss gets thrown into jail, a regretful Kitty went to save him. At this point in time, the mother goose (a giant one at that) had arrived at the town to look for her little one. It started to destroy all the buildings in town and Puss knew that the only way to resolve this was to return the baby goose to her mother. As he went closer to the point on top of a bridge to return the baby goose, the bridge was partially destroyed by the mother goose and Puss was left hanging with the baby goose in one hand and Humpty in the other, both hanging by the rope. Humpty then made a sacrifice and decided to let go so that Puss could save the baby goose to return to her mother and stop the rampage.

As Puss looked down, he saw a golden egg that Humpty had broken into. He then said that "I always knew you were good on the inside" (or something along those lines)

Verdict

The animation and performances by Antonio Banderas and Zach Galifianakis were great. However, there was not much originality with the repeat of the big eyes of Puss in Boots. The story was not really great either. However, if you just want to enjoy some cute scenes with sprinkled funny bits, this would be a good "watch and forget" show to just unwind with.
